Start up the server, connect to the IP address displayed on your iPhone, and you can import bookmarks (saved in HTML format) from your Mac or PC, or export iCab’s bookmarks. You can import and export bookmarks using iCab Mobile’s built-in webserver. I used this feature to add to the list of search sources, and it worked perfectly. If that’s not enough, you can add your own search engines with relative ease-you just need to run a search on the site first, and then enter the URL with a special variable substitution code in the right spot. (If you use this last option, you can’t open the results on a new tab instead, the matching terms on the current site are nicely highlighted.) You can search using Google, Yahoo, Lycos, Wikipedia, or Ebay, or search on the currently-loaded page. On this screen, you enter your search terms, specify whether to open the results in a new tab or not, and choose which search engine you’d like to use. Instead, you tap a magnifying glass to open the Searching screen. ICab Mobile’s search feature is different than most other browsers-there’s no dedicated search box in the URL bar. (When the browser restarts, it will attempt to reload the opened tabs most of the time, this worked well for me, though iCab Mobile occasionally lost a few open tabs.) So be careful with this feature, as it’s easy to open too many background tabs. ![]() ![]() This isn’t a crash per se, but it looks like one to the user. If you run out of memory, the iPhone OS will summarily quit the program. This option works very well, within the memory constraints of the iPhone-the machine’s limited memory limits the number of background tabs you can open. There’s also a top-level option to open all tabs in the background with this set, all links will always open in background tabs. ICab Mobile offers good control over link behavior, as well as image display, ad filters, and enabling and disabling image display You can also specify to be prompted for link handling with this feature enabled, a pop-up menu containing these same link-handling options will appear after tapping a link. Using the program’s options screen, you can set-independently for links to the same domain and links to other domains-whether a link opens normally (as defined by the Web site, either in a new tab or the same tab), in a new tab, or in the current tab. While not as convenient as in-browser tabs, it’s a good solution given the limited screen real estate of the iPhone.įor link-heavy sites, iCab Mobile offers a variety of ways to manage what happens when you click a link. This is the only way to switch tabs you can’t flip between them via a swipe, for instance. Instead, each tab appears on an Open Tabs page click any listed tab to switch to that tab in the browser. Time will tell if this catches on.ICab uses a tab-centric design, though the way tabs are implemented is more window-like than tab-like-there aren’t visible tabs within the window as you’d see in most any desktop browser. Possibly the most standout feature, though, is the addition of a built-in cryptocurrency wallet. Plus, the browser is secure to keep you safe from malware and features a free VPN (virtual private network). ![]() Opera Reborn 3 also features a vertical left rail that enables some simple actions, like using Facebook Messenger, seeing your search history or "liking" a page. There's also Opera Mini, which is great for situations where you may have limited bandwidth. ![]() That includes tabs in the window, certain mouse gestures, and the loading thumbnail that serves as a "speed dial" on page tabs.Ī new version of Opera, "Reborn 3," borrows from some of the design principles that are seen in the mobile version of the browser, which is much more popular-and some of these adds are truly innovative, so don't be surprised if you start to see them copied by other browsersįor instance, Opera Touch makes it the first mobile browser to find a solution for easy one-handed browsing. Just as Instagram and Facebook copied Snapchat with their own "stories" features, today's most popular web browsers-like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox-have directly copied features from the Opera browser.
